I use dbPoweramp and it's default FLAC compression level is 5. I found that I could drop down to 2 or 3 and files would compress twice as fast and the file sizes would only be a few percent larger. However, FLAC compression at level 5 is already fast enough; it takes minimal time compared to ripping. I also tried the higher compression levels. Levels 7 and 8 take a lot longer to compress and didn't really result in smaller files. Here is a blog post from somebody with similar experiences:http://z-issue.com/wp/flac-compression-level-comparison/
I've also found that there is absolutely no difference in decompression time or CPU usage on playback from FLAC level 0 to FLAC level 8. The difference is only on compression, where selecting a higher level gives you the option of burning away CPU cycles on optimization to save a very small amount of hard drive space.

- Correct, but the different levels of FLAC compression have little effect on file size - Dave_K 07:03:48 03/18/18 (0)
