"Rock music" .... possibly explains your view.

My guess is that audiophiles who listen to classical music are the most likely to sing the praises of SACD, followed by jazz listeners, followed by Rock/pop listeners. SACD does tend to sound more 'laid back' etc, not as edgy as CD. I can well imagine feeling that CDs seem more lively when listening to rock. There is perhaps no such thing what a rock band 'really' sounds like; what you get live, from a PA system, is compressed and distorted as compared with a good hi fi, but punchier, more exciting. Maybe CD sounds more like that. IN any case there is no question to me that SACD is far superior in reproducing the sonic attributes audiophiles look for in classical music - low level detail, ambient space, realistic timbre of acoustic instruments, the 'bloom' of a good string section, etc. Such refinements are mostly irrelevant to rock. Likewise for acoustic jazz; here the difference is not as pronounced, but it is there, and certainly the sense of space - so important in small group recordings - conveyed by SACD beats what CD can do (if not what LP can do).
