That's the thing. If HP got a bad sample, or it was improperly set up, OK, that happens. But HP should have been the one to check the new sample. Or, if he said, "Nah, I don't feel like it," JV's review should have run as an addendum or second look, after HP's. There's nothing wrong with a second opinion, but putting it first and making the original review a sidebar makes it seem either that the magazine no longer trusts HP's ears, or doesn't want to anger the manufacturer.

Also, I don't share your faith in Ortofon's history. All companies have the occasional design that doesn't work out, or manufacturing glitch.
