RE: How often do you see someone admit to that in an audiphile forum?

One of my VHS machines at the time was a Panasonic or Technics that could record PCM stereo quite decently for the times. I think that it was 14bit.

At first, I got all enthused by its quality because it had separate input adjustment for each channel. However, I soon dicovered that there was no way to defeat its peak limiter. When I took it to my band rehearsal, live music promptly showed its limitations. In those days I did not know of the digital format's dislike for things past 0 on the VU scale, so I was frustrated. Analog tape's ability to deal more gracefully with peaks became all the more appreciated.

At playing movies through the 400 watts (bi-amped) stereo, however, it was impressive. This was early 80s and we had a 37" flat screen of the times. As friends discovered it they kept inviting themselves to watch the major games or bring their VHS hi-fi action movies. My wife put her foot down on the latter: games, ok but movies, at their whim, nicht!
