Hi Steve:
I take it you can not hear differences in absolute polarity. That's fine: some do and many don't. I simply find that often subtle changes in tonality and detail are obscured by polarity inversions. When polarities are corrected for, harmonic structures are more "natural" ad aligned correctly in regards to the fundamentals. Timing, of course, is improved, particularly in the lower frequencies.
Correcting for absolute polarity must take into account any mixtures created by the recording process itself. It is important to note that polarity inversions are a facet of the recording and playback process, not real life, unamplified music.
Even if a recording is mixed in absolute polarity, I can still identify which instruments or voices are inverted or in correct polarity. It does take practice, though, and it is of great help to have someone more experienced to be able to point out differences at the beginning of awareness, particularly in the more complex mixes.
I, personally, would not recommend this tweak on bridged amplifiers nor on digital amps. However, as you point out, the tweak should not do anything anyway.
Stu
