in general that must be considered to be "as valuable a thing as any other that human beings can conceive or understand". To your point, and Paul_A's below, if we define "evolution" as being an unavoidable and accurate term for "forward progress through time", it disheartening to recognize that our "progress" is being accompanied by "regression" in matters of fine art and maybe even general human intelligence. So, to revisit the driver behind my original post, it's not so clear that quote in the NY Times is hyperbole at all: this matter IS "really important" as a barometer.
