I have actually heard all three of your mentioned setups. The MBL and reel to reel I've heard at United home Audio, a company specializing in tricked out reel to reel tape machines. Their MBL setup sounds particularly good (MBL can be hit or miss at shows, but, when correctly set up, they sound really good).
Actually, I heard a field coil Altec 604 system, not an Altec 19 and liked what I heard. I also hear Audio Note gear at my local dealership Deja Vu Audio, and I own Audio Note Sogon interconnects and speaker wires and a Kageki amplifier. If you visit the Washington DC area, you MUST stop in at Deja Vu Audio; they make their own custom high efficiency horn systems and their own amplifiers that are shockingly different from the usual high end gear. I own a pushpull 4 watt amp of their making that is killer good.
