I don't think what's happening in the mastering stage of the commercial CD is the cause of all the consternation regarding the sound of CDs. (Tho it's not insignificant.) To my ears most of the XRCD, XRCD2, XRCD24 and even the CD layer of a lot of SACDs sound a heck of a lot better than "regular" CDs. If you read JVC's or FIM's rational for their mastering and manufacturing processes they talk about many causes.

Also CD layers on SACD are mostly mastered with more precision and produced with lower jitter.
