You've tried the CD-R from vinyl vs LP test and discovered their was a huge difference, then?

Certainly if you can record at higher rez, why not do so? But it hits the shelves at 16/44.1 most of the time. And have you asked anyone in the recording industry where they place vinyl in the hierarchy in terms of fidelity? Of SACD, Redbook and vinyl, they place vinyl dead last - at least the ones I've spoken with. They do enjoy what they refer to as the added warmth of vinyl but they don't honestly compare it to a live mic feed.

But my original point wasn't to bad mouth vinyl. As I said, half the time it's better. But I place the blame with bad recordings of any medium where I believe it lies - in the recording or mastering. There's just too many incredible sounding CD's out there for me to believe otherwise.
