Re: Why is it you continually obfuscate?

"In the first place, neither theaudiohobby nor the quoted text from TAC imply that every SS amp is better than every tube amp"

Pat, do you have a reading impediment? Of course that is EXACTLY what TAC and particularyl Aczel is saying! He says they belong in microwave ovens! Audiohobby, by using this quote and comments like "common knowledge" is clearly throwing down in support of this notion.

"That is not Aczel's position, and it doesn't become his just because you have formed the impression that it is."

Please tell me that you are mentally challenged in some way so that I don't get offended by your blatant word twisting. Aczel clearly states that anything a tube can do the transistor can do better!!

"Soundstage and Stereophile have done measurements of the distortion characteristics of quite a number of SS and tube amps. Perhaps you should check them out before buying the nonsense about the distortion from tube amps being less audible than that of SS amps. It's not a good generalization. A number of good solid state amps have far lower distortion than most tube amps. And that's one standard for being better."

See my post above. If you accept that higher order harmonics are more detrimental to sound quality then the picture from the distortion measurements is not quite so clear as you might suppose. Look at which amps GENERALLY have lower high order harmonics. Hint: it isn't the SS amps. It is interesting to note the exceptions in both tube and SS camps as well.

"Many tube amps have a relatively high output impedance, so that their frequency response curve is often quite uneven into many speaker loads"

True. And your point is? If your speaker doesn't have a roller coaster for an impedance curve its not that relevant. Understanding what your speaker is doing BEFORE you buy the amp is sort of necessary, don't ya think? If your speaker is a nightmare then maybe you will have to use an amp with a low output impedance. Or you could use Speltz zeroformers and bring the impedance of the speaker up (think of it as another passive component in the xover) to where all amps can be happy with it.
