Dear Douglas,In my experience vinyl records last pretty much forever, I have owned 3 copies of the same record, SXL 2197, Ricci plays Bizet/Sarasate for about 18 years now, all are original 1960 grooved copies, one rarely gets played, one I use at home and have played perhaps 100 times and one lives in my show travel pack and must have had 1500 to 2000 plays, perhaps more, many of you will have heard this record played in my room at shows.
A comparison between the three show no audible wear on the "travel" copy on my system, so I think it is safe to say that vinyl has at least the same or better longevity as CD or SACD, provided one uses a good stylus and replay system.
Given that some of my early CDs are beginning to show "corrossion" at the edges, I wonder how long they will be playable.
Difference is, you can still play a damaged LP, which is not the case with a damaged CD, another advantage of the analogue format!
Sincerely,
Peter Qvortrup
