People bought cd over LP because there was an advantage - no flipping sides, portable, less noise, no needle replacement, more durable (supposedly), could store more running time on cd, and of course the slogans "Perfect Sound Forever" launched cd.But what is the advantage to SACD? They improved on perfection obviously or the public isn't so stupid this time around. The public probably views it as a gimmick to stop Kazaa downloading of music - "ahh but SACD is much better so spend $18.00 instead of $12.00 because you are getting ten times better sound" - nonsense.
MOST PEOPLE don't give a damn about the quality which is why MP3 which is measurably inferior is FAR MORE sought after than SACD.
Sony etc tried to lead the market by putting out very expensive machines and likely paid off the magazines to write nice little reviews about this revolutionary snake-oil. Got the rich to buy em all up - alla DCC and DAT - and now Sony, at least in Canada, wonders why no one wants any. Sony put out a $200.00 machine and only sold them because they were DVD players as well.
The SACD only titles don't sell - so now they are selling them as Hybrid discs and lowered the price. In other words it's a total waste of time for most people. Sony was expecting a cash cow and I bet most people buying the machines and the discs have no idea what they're buying. may as well be the old AAD ADD and DDD. Interestingly, some of the best recordings I have are AAD.
And the multi-channel SACD is a neat experience if you have the rig...but some discs like the Eagles they often demo are truly awful with all the fake rear effects - it's a distraction and certainly not adding necessary information.
Some have been pretty good - but it's probably just a better recording.
