Thanks for the explanation, Dave. I appreciate your note. However, doesn't "functioning" means it is in working condition (which is, indeed, different from a function)? The fact remains that -ity is a suffix meaning "state". Would one ask, "What is the functionality of this amp?", and expect the reply to be, "It works great." Not the way I have heard the word used. Ads speak of "increased functionality". Does that mean a greater degree in its ability to be in a working condition? No. From what I can tell, and admittedly I feel on shaky ground, it means new features have been added.This confusion seems like a problem to me. And I contend it is born out of ignorance of the basic meaning of a suffix, not out of a desire to communicate more clearly or effectively. But, hey! I have a reputation as a nitpicker and fussbudget. After all, look at my obsession with sound.
