(7) Amplifiers: 300B types are not necessary if the right (efficient) speakers are used. Both 45 and 2A3 types can, and should be used unless there is a demonstrated need for more power. Use monoblock amplifiers only-- Amplifiers must be simple: with a minimum number of gain stages, preferably only two for tube...
Three points here, all of which I disagree with.
1) A good 300b with the right driver - and this is important and has been said many times - such as a 10Y, is just as good as a 2a3 or 45.
2) Amplifiers must be good, not simple, and good starts with the tubes used. If you use an all DHT setup - three stages - then forget monobloks with AC in their chassis, because you want a separate power supply chassis so that only DC gets in to your signal chassis. Two separate units.
3) When you use the best input tubes like DHTs - 26, 01A, 10Y, 46, 71A etc - you need three stages not two (unless you use a stepup transformer). I'm continually amazed that audiophiles go out of their way to put a DHT in the output and forget all about what a DHT adds to the input. In fact DHTs in the input stages are even more critical. OK, small DHT tubes are not made these days but ebay and tube dealeres are flooded with old radio tubes like the 26 which will laugh at any 6SN7 or 417A.
I make these points not to say "I'm right" but just to make it clear that experienced builders have radically different views of what constitutes a good sounding amp. There will never be a consensus and nor should there be if we are to believe in creativity.
