Technical and scientific discussion of amps, cables and other topics.

So who is here talking about assessing a preference with DBTs?????

"It is invalid in assessing whether one power cord or one amp sounds better to most people."

1) Establishing that the peformance of two things is audibly different is one thing. IF one wishes to prove there is an audible difference, THEN blind testing is needed. Of course, if one does not want to prove that, it is not.

2) Forming a preference is another. People form preferences in many ways and this is ordinarily done sighted. There is no particular reason why doing a controlled blind test should be used as part of the process of forming preferences unless they want to. I am not demanding, requiring, or asking them to do blind tests, and as far as I can tell, no one else around here is doing so.

However, when someone claims to be able to detect an audible difference, then we sometimes ask if they did a controlled blind test, so that we may assess whether there is any reason to believe their claim. For some reason, many object to be asked that simple question.

I am not saying that DBTs could not be used to assess preferences as to sound quality (Dr. Floyd Toole has been doing that for speakers for many years), but that implies that people can actually hear a difference.
