I'm not sure what you mean by the ecc being in the transport side. The SP/DIF interface uses Reed-Solomon ecc and therefore the receiver has to decode the signal. The serial signal is actually a fairly slow signal compared to DSP processor speeds so ecc can happen on the fly, in real-time.You are correct though, that moderate bit loss will cause sounds like pops, clicks and other annoying sounds. However, I would estimate that bit loss would be fairly rare in our typical home audio systems with only a few feet of cable and bandwidth of only 3 mHz.
