I have not heard Amarra.
But I do hear differences with the Ayre QB-9 when using Direct Sound versus ASIO4ALL in Windows XP. (For instance.) Both are bit-perfect. There is no reason they should sound different. But they do. Not hugely different, but noticeably to a careful listener with a good system.
The same is true of our CD players. The master clock is 1" from the DAC chip and every thing in the clock chain has its own individual zero-feedback voltage regulator. The transport runs off of a completely different transformer. But putting a mat on the CD changes the sound.
Makes no sense to me. I can't even make hand-waving arguments as to what is happening. But something is....
