So what about...

...timing inaccuracies at the recording stage. Is this no longer jitter? If so then is the jitter not still extant when the subsequent file has moved on to a hard drive (solid state or otherwise), optical disc or suitably large piece of paper (ie. nowhere near a clock)?

If I take an out-of-focus photograph on a digital camera, the out-of-focusness will be retained all the way along the chain. Having a super duper asynchronous monitor won't focus my pic.

And for what it's worth - I like Riboge's thinking.
