I'm still not sure I understand

Hi Tony.

These aren't questions I'm asking anyone to answer, they are just the thoughts passing through my head at present:

I keep coming back to that -144dB null result. All I can think is either Audacity is broken, or mitchco's protocol is faulty, or the various changes caused by the tested media players are trivial which would then bring us right back to the original debate.

Mitchco says the signal is being generated in his PC by a media player, then passing through an ASIO driver, through a USB cable to the Lynx Hilo and then back out of the Hilo through a USB cable, through an ASIO driver and back into his PC and ultimately to Audacity. Shouldn't this introduce some sort of noise? If so, then how does he get -144dB? Are digital protocols that good?

I get that JRMC will leave its fingerprints on a file. I get that Foobar will leave its fingerprints on a file. Heck, for that matter, shouldn't Audacity, Windows and OSX also leave fingerprints on the file? Given all those smudges, how on earth can we get a -144dB null?

Just how much additional damage does a media player have to inflict on the signal before a null test would show a musically meaningful amount of change?

Eh. I can see, I think, the point mitchco is trying to make. I can see, I think, the point John Swenson is trying to make. I think that I'm going to have to wait for someone else to try to repeat mitchco's test before I make up my mind.

As promised, I admit that this board has got me doubting my own beliefs, and that's something, right?

All the best

J.E.
