too many variables....
The only thing that matters is the final result. As in the end, and until something changes, this infancy stage of computer software + interface + outboard DAC(s) as transports, is still 1 step down from previous state of the art sources.
No software companies, and no hardware companies have established themselves with years of the foundation of a Meitner, LAMM, VAC, Avalon, Karma, etc. Those elements of synergy, & gestalt of consistency over time reach far beyond the somewhat experimental code of a playback program.
When people talk about these things, and they get reviewed, they are reviewed as an individual item, which further clouds the experience.
It's all about, and only about, the experience. Either the complete experience is worth it, or it is not.
Again, this is very similar to the bullcrap (explanation) about software based "error correction" in a digital disc transport. As we've seen, "error correction" does NOT compensate for using a crappy motor, a cheap disc clamp, or not using isolation/vibration control devices.
You can't "fix" certain kinds of problems with "better" software, and what happens in the lab, doesn't necessarily equate with what happens in the living room.
"Asylums with doors open wide,
Where people had paid to see inside,
For entertainment they watch his body twist
Behind his eyes he says, 'I still exist.'"
