It was a response to your post comparing turntable owners to Harley owners who would rather spend all of their time cleaning and maintaining their bikes than actually riding. The poster was pointing out how ridiculous unfair and insulting your comparison was, but since you didn't understand let me elaborate: Most turntable owners do not spend all of their time maintaining their turntables or vacuuming records rather than listening to music. Most of us love music, and love listening to music, and that is why we own turntables.Let me give you a concrete example since you seem to have difficulty comprehending abstract ideas: Yesterday I had a pretty crummy day. To improve my mood I decided I would stop by my local record store. I picked up 5 classical LPs, including the Boulez version of Bartok's Concerto for Orchestra (available on SACD too). My total out of pocket expense was $5.24. I went home, and put one of my new records on the turntable. I used a carbon fiber brush to dust the record off, and treated my stylus with some LP #9 cleaner. Total time spent on this exercise: about 10 seconds. Then I sat back and enjoyed a very nice performance. I did the same thing with 3 more records before bed. It was a good night. I will probably get around to vacuuming my new purchases tonight.
Now you might believe that I am not a real music lover because I spent a little bit of time messing with my equipment, and *horror* will probably spend about 10 minutes vacuuming those records at some point rather than listening to them. But the way I look at it I got 5 nice pieces of music for one-quarter of what I would have paid for the Bartok SACD. I think it's a fair trade. You may not, but that's your business. (And maybe, if I *really* end up loving the Bartok LP, but decide that the vinyl is too noisy, I just may buy the SACD at some point in the future).
Why didn’t I just put on an SACD or CD you ask? I mean, if I really love music I could have saved the time I spent flipping the records, cleaning the stylus, etc. Thanks for asking. For sure it would have been easier to play a CD. Just one problem: My Philips SACD 1000 is in the shop for repairs for the second time in 9 months (talk about equipment being a pain in the ass!).
Further, vinyl enthusiasts have no monopoly on messing with and maintaining equipment. Look at all the digital tweaks out there; green pens, demagnetizers, clarifiers, re-cutters, anti-static sprays, etc., etc. Now I could try to demonize those who use these products as only being in it for the equipment, but I assume that most of them go through the trouble because those treatments help them enjoy their music more (whether they actually work is another question).
Maybe it's time for you to jump down off your high horse and stop passing judgment on those who enjoy music on non-digital formats. Your comparison of vinyl enthusiasts to Harley owners is simply not fair, and does not square with the fact that the vast majority of turntable owners are music lovers first, and equipment lovers second. You do not have any high ground to claim here, your comparison could be applied to digiphiles who constantly swap cables, treat their discs with green pens, etc. (BTW, I have no idea if your assesment of Harely owners is accurate, but have assumed that it is for the sake of arguement).
