Sounds like we agree

Those early players were pretty crappy.

Others think they sounded fine.

Didn't the early Telarcs have a frequency change in the digital domain? If so, the master used for the CD was a 2nd generation master.

Good question. Maybe second gen, but not "many times". I'm intrigued by Telarc's use of the term "Soundstream" version of the early Firebird available in SACD. That suggests to me they were able to maintain the original resolution.
