See the link below for George's explanation of using multiple conductor sizes in cables.There is some other nice information on the Cardas website as well. For example, he has in interesting page with measurements (!) comparing his speaker cable against 12 AWG zip cord:

It's nice because he has conveniently included the difference between the input and the output.
Here's an excerpt from that page:
"There are many speaker and interconnect cables on the market. I suggest you listen to the difference between any typical parallel twin and 12 gauge twisted pair. If you can’t tell the difference, don’t spend your money on high end cable. Focus your system a little better."
