IMHO 'BigguyinATL' has offered the best advise. You should start by trying different arrangements without any wall treatment, etc. which are convenient with your living requirements. Keep in mind that the equilateral method involving the distances between the speakers and listening seat might be worthwhile to try.
Keep in mind that hundreds of millions of dollars were spent in the design, construction and modifications of Philharmonic Hall (later called Avery Fischer and David Geffen Hall honoring their financial contributions). Some of the best minds in the field of acoustical engineering were hired for this purpose. The result: the interior of the building is to be gutted in order to start from scratch.
