As Hoshi said, it's the asymmetric top and bottom spacings which are the key.
Also, although I built the standard 3-pipe, I suspect it would be better to build, say, a 5-pipe. As you can see from the pic, I have mine so they diffract the rear-wave reflection from the ribbon - the sound stage is so much deeper when they are "up" (compared to when they are lying flat on the floor).
And possibly 2 or 3 pairs located in different places would be even better! :-))
I had my 'woodman' (who made up the IIIa woodies) create some bases of 1 3/4" timber with 3 holes in it, to take the pipes. The pipes are covered with some slightly-stretchy material.
