one slab of granite. sheesh. Had to, to stop the feedback.
I was reading Dudley in the newest S'phile. He talks about the Thorens TD124 and all the components as being purpose built. AS that the TD124 is a good example of engineering as opposed to any MDF slab or off the shelf sourced table. Same goes for the SL1200: purpose built components.
slapped together vs engineered.
can something work well that is slapped together? yes.
Even the modifications are better integrated. Meaning the VTAF is a deconstructive attempt to the get the arm to work better by decoupling. It works well but mounting point is allowed some play.
BTW, to offer a better arm up the chain by only tightening the bearings is a rippoff way to off a 'better' arm. they should tighten those bearings precisely at the cheapest arm, charge no more, then build a new revision as an upgrade. Maybe add VTA adjust, for one.
I have been playing records for years, just like everyone else here, but in the past two years have come to see how much bullshit is tied up in this. When you handle something that is well built you KNOW it. You do not have to say, "You are just not getting light platform philosophy here."
