Re: "Better" is a terribly relative term when it comes to vinyl (long)

I grew up on vinyl and when the CD came out, still played vinyl as I never got a CD player until I purchsased the Pioneer CD changer in 1989 and now have a nice modest Denon carousel that sounds nice, definately an improvement over the Pioneer that's for sure.

While one can make both the CD and vinyl sources tonally similar, the vinyl does win, if not by sonics alone but by it's visceral experience of actually getting involved in it by placing the disc on a platter and setting down the tonearm etc.

And when I finally could afford to get a CDP, I never gave up on my vinyl rig and while there were times when I played CD's more than vinyl in the early days, I never lost faith in the vinyl format. At that time, I still was using the audiocassette and a reel to reel deck as well and even had an old analogue eq in the setup for a while. Gave up on R2R finally after my last deck, an old early 70's era Akai went all out of adjustment and could not play right but soldiered on with the venerable cassette the past couple of years. I still have one deck and a bunch of the tapes I"ve made, that's it though and mostly for transcribing a few family related tapes to the computer and ultimately to CD is it's main use, and for scrolling through to create a playlist so I can remake onto CD - from scratch using original CD or vinyl sources as I have them.

But you are right though, vinyl with it's sonic limitations is more an experience than anything but when done right, can sound mighty awsome and in many cases can out do a CD in many areas.

And I think a lot of this has to do with the nature of analogue itself, rather than it being vinyl per se.
