I agree. I just set up a very inexpensive vinyl based system for my son consisting of a vintage Pioneer PL-12D which I purchased for $5 from a garage sale. Spent $120 Cnd. through a dealer (who properly installed and aligned) for an Audio Technica AT-120E (yes I know it can be purchased cheaper on-line but I wanted to to have it properly set up and I am a clutz). I've been using this set up with a Project Phono Box, but I also acquired for $55 Cnd. a used DB Systems MM phono pre that smokes the Project.

You can do the math. For a minimal investment, this vinyl front end is very engaging. What it does well, it really does well and what it doesn't do well is, in the overall scheme of things, less important to me (and my son for that matter), at least compared to redbook CD playback for up to 3 or 4 times (maybe even more) the price. There's a sterility, a hardness to most redbook CD compared to most vinyl playback that just doesn't allow for long term pleasurable listening without heavy listening "fatigue".

But your point is well taken: the phono pre is very important. One need not spend a lot of money though, to get great performance even with phono preamps if you shop carefully.
