Questions about tubes and gear that glows. FAQ

PCBs and RC of America

I have been an audiophile for 43 years. Much of this has been tube gear. Some stuff runs hot, some hotter, some could warm the room in winter time at idle.

I have rolled tubes a lot. I have never once cracked or broken any circuit board even on the cheap stuff with lousy quality PCB's built way back in the day before modern plastics, epoxies, and the other exotic PCB materials.

So I guess if you want to claim ptp is better, I would claim NOT. I used to sell scientific equipment and PCB is much more accurate in measuring performance. Many mock up prototypes were ptp and none measured anywere as well as the final product PCB.

Most of the problems I see with PTP is that the quality of the manufacturer is critical. If solder separates contacts you are listening to the solder instead of the equipment. If the solder cracks then you have all kinds of issues.

That said. I let my ears tell me what sounds good better and best. Yes some 10k to 25k ptp amps sound pretty tasty. And my 30 year old Precision Fidelity M7a amps sound pretty tasty too. I was tube rolling today and had no issues with my PCB even after 30+ years of making smiles the size of Texas!

If it sounds good, and makes you smile, IT IS ALL GOOD ptp or pcb!

Make sure you send some bucks to the Red Cross of America, they are going to need it in the next 72 hours to be sure!!!

Cheers
