Troubling comment from Mike Sanders (Quicksilver Audio)

66.108.197.36

In last months issue of Stereophile rag, Sam Tellig comments on Mike Sanders Mid Mono Quicksilver monoblocks. At one point, Tellig reports Mike Sanders as saying: Mike doesn't like what circuit boards do to the sound. "It seems that circuit boards degrade the sound," he said. "There's a reliability issue, too. Output tubes get really hot. After a while, circuit board turn brittle and crack, especially when you're pulling tubes in and out. A circuit board is just not going to last very long in a power amp. When circuit boards start failing, it's expensive to fix them, and the result of the repair is always something of a jerry-rigged situation. We want to make things that last."

If this is true, then why the hell would ANY manufacturer make tube amps with circuit boards EVER? Don't tell me its cheaper, because a Rogue Cronus cost $2000 and so do the Mid Monos from Quicksilver. They both produce 50-watts output power. So its not cost. Maybe its just easier to build a tube amp using a circuit board than wire to wire? I've never built one so I'm just guessing this is why.

Still, just how accurate is Mike Sanders' comment on circuit boards getting brittle and cracking? Is there some truth to his statement. Inquiring minds want to know...
