Having heard Monteux live twice in the early 60's, I can attest his public performances were much less bland and internationalized that he sounds on record, at least in stereo. I own two SFSO readings (Frank, Brahms 2) from 1946 and 1950 that are classics, I should add.
I have heard a lot of his Beethoven with the LSO and VPO and while quite good, it is far too straightforward for my tastes. Monteux's 5th in particular is little more than routine.
Still, the memory of those concerts (in Munich with the French Radio Orch and the LSO) is vivid. Picture a short, bowling-pin shaped gentleman with a beaming bright pink face, jet black hair, and snow-white moustache!
