As for the *very best* I have to advance Mengelberg on Telefunken, a studio performance that grips one nonetheless, better far than the actual live recording on Philips. It's oop. but the Telefunken CD transfer ain't bad.
Also a dark-horse candidate: Steinberg with Pittsburgh, on Capitol.
