There's been a significant increase in the number of motorcycle rider deaths in the last few years, and it's almost all riders 40 and over.Older riders account for about half of the overall motorcycle deaths; close to 70% of deaths while riding on large, heavy motorcycles (i.e. Harleys and Harley clones) are riders 40 and over.
Younger first-time motorcyclists are more likely to buy lighter, smaller motorcycles. Older first-time motorcyclists are more likely to buy bigger, heavier bikes (and then crash them). Most of these crashes are single-vehicle (i.e. no one else involved).
Motorcyclists over 40 are less likely to wear an effective helmet than other age groups.
Motorcyclists over 40 are more likely to drink and ride (and crash) than other age groups.
Young men on sportbikes are viewed as the reckless daredevils, but as a group, Baby Boomers are the ones doing most of the crashing and dying.
