It is what reaches ours ears that really matters. If the sound reaching our ears is not "reasonably flat" and accurate to the original then imbalances are created between fundementals and overtones making up the sound of an instrument, thus altering the timbre and general nature of the sound.

Speaker measurements can only give you an idea as to if you may have a fighting chance of getting "reasonably flat" at your ears. Once you start thinking of the speaker system as including the room the speaker is in, and realise the massive effects a room can have, then all bets can be taken.
