A Formula For Successful Mediocrity....

I think what ultimately happened was the music industry, with the help from our media, ultimately came up with a formula that has enabled mediocrity to succeed.

The music industry and media has conditioned today's society that good is bad and bad is good. The rationale for such judgment is "social relevance." And the trend is that more and more people are being conditioned to judge music in a like manner. And are being conditioned to no longer trust their emotional reaction to the music, because it's too often the "good is bad" type of music.

This, in turn, has enabled artists to get by with mediocrity, yet still succeed. Because the media has been deemimg mediocrity that's socially relevant as "excellence". (See link.)

And nobody strives for excellence anymore, because it's simply easier to remain mediocre.

And the false label of "excellence" has made real excellence almost unrecognizable. Due to the lack of exposure to alternative forms of music, many don't have a true perspective- The only "excellence" they know of is the best of the mediocrity.

It seems like the only solution to the problem is to raise a generation of children capable of thinking their way through the societal jungle that sends many of them off-course. Parents need to be able to spend more quality time with the kids. Which could make the difference in them being able to see through the societal jungle. And maybe reverse this trend. The problem is finding the means to those ends.
