RE: The 4 ways to decode digital

Hi,

Sorry, I am not specifically commenting on any product. There are several "famous DAC" with FPGA and which is more famous also depends on which side of the pond you are.... :)

For example, you can now get a 4 USD Chip to "upsample" to DSD256 or 768kHz PCM, but no higher. An FPGA or DSP or Microprocessor instead can run much faster.

Also, you get to choose your favourite digital filter, rather than having to use what is build into the Chip. So it often makes sense to use such Devices. But again, presence or absence of such a device is not very meaningful, be it a TI SHARC or AD Blackfin DSP, Xilinx Spartan, Altera CYCLONE or Lattice MACH4000 FPGA or just a generic MCU like (for example) and XCORE Transputer Chip or a Freescale CORTEX.

What matters is what code is in these devices and how they are designed into the system.

BTW, for DAC's you should distinguish three global types:

1) Pure Multibit (e.g. PCM1704, Soekris DAC1021)
2) Pure Delta Sigma (e.g. SM5872, various FIR Analogue Filter types)
3) Hybrid MB + DS (e.g. Burr Brown DSD1793 plus almost all current Audio DAC's)

Each of these may be realised on a dedicated audio DAC Chip, may integrate Digital Filters and other DSP components on Chip or not, may allow these DSP components to be bypassed or not, or it may be realised in any number of levels of discrete circuitry, though usually integrated circuits are used for switching and for DSP functions (if any).

At 20 bits, you are on the verge of dynamic range covering fly-farts-at-20-feet to intolerable pain. Really, what more could we need?
