Hello,
I'm looking for opinions on DVD players, certainly in the sub $100 range and will be using the player for AUDIO only. Not hooked to a TV at all.
The display on the unit must read the track number of the song. Time would be great too.
Any suggestions? (New or used model numbers and brands).
Maybe we could assemble a list. I got started on this because a friend gave me an old Pioneer and the darned thing sounds almost as nice as my "he man rig" CD player!
The new Toshiba SD-3300, 4300, 7300 series look nice, but I cannot determine from the so-called "information" on Toshiba.com if the display will indicate the track number. And of course, did you ever try to contact Toshiba (or any other big company for that matter)??? Ha, big joke and a big run-around!!!
Business doesn't want to talk with PESKY CUSTOMERS!
Thanks fellows!
Mark

I've found a couple of used Panasonic DV-414 DVD players at thrift stores, one with the remote for under $20. As a transport via digital it is surprisingly good and plays video dvds too of course but outputs audio up to 96/24 (earlier models where limited to 48Khz).
In my main system I use a Pioneer DV-45a which is a universal player; DVD/CD/DVDA/SACD and I love it but I've never seen one used. Anyhow Pioneer players, particularly the Elites are a good choice IMHO
I have a Pioneer 610AV and am having issues playing DVD-Audio out of it.
Can i only control it via a monitor? When i do manage to get sound out of it, its just an odd clicking/stuttering noise. Its hooked up to a DAC via an optical cable then into a HK receiver.
Sorry to hijack this post.
tried the analog outputs directly to a line level input on your HK?

dts-cds dvd-audio &mch sacds & blu-ray concerts & speaker amp sound system tweaks rule
As luck would have it, Mark, you have several great choices out there.
Keep us posted on which player you buy.
Hello Mark-
check out a Pioneer 563 or 47A DVD player(s).
I've owned both the 563 and the 47A but ended up giving away the 563. It's a nice player, especially with mods, but the stock 47A sounds warmer and more analogue-like to me. So if your system tends toward "dark," the go with the 563.
Agreed,
the 47A is a great player for the money.
I have a 48A, picked up @ the Zon for under a 100. on closeout. I also have a Yamaha 1800 which I currently favor.
Both benefited with the use of an upgraded power cord and power filtering.
These can be had for ~$75 on sites like Audiogon.com...

I have for some time now a Toshiba 3950 :-) (Hey! It claims a 24 bit 192hz dac) Modded with ALL the then current mods. Unlikey I could stuff in any more 'improvements'.
Point of this is: the other day I had to plug in an old cheap ass JVC portable CD player contraption I found in my Son's former room.
Damn if the thing doesn't sound than my Toshiba. it's missing all the zingy digital feel of the tosh.
Yes.. a tiny loss in ultimate detail, BFD :-) This thing is listenable endlessly V nice. Who woulda thought?
Now, thinking My Toshiba is well past it's use by date. I'm looking for a replacement.
One that isn't even a little bit Harsh??
Does such a gizmo actually exist??
Pioneer 653A, or Pioneer Elite 47A. Both will play DVD-A without a display hooked up. You may need to hook up a display once to make all the settings, but after that treat it just like a CD player. The 563's go for 30-40 bucks on the bay. Plus there are tons of upgrades for them which greatly improve their sound quality.
A suggestion--avoid Sony BluRay players, since you will need a monitor to see the track information you want.
Yes, i have also a bad experience with Sony products.
The user experience of the products of Sony is not so good. I am using a Toshiba since last 3 years and there is no bad user experience.
Thanks for that information.
I bought a Sony DVD player intending to use it for audio only...the model DVP SR-200P... NOT REALIZING that the blasted thing wouldn't display the track number of the songs.
Who knew???
I was living in the past I guess and just took it for granted. Every DVD player I'd ever seen had displayed the song number.
The maddening thing is, it sounds darned good as an audio player. Better than it should for around $35 new. I paid $20 for my slightly used one.

Just get a small flat screen TV from a thrift store.
