HI All,
I'm relatively new to internet forums (1 year). Quite often I see posters apologizing for long posts. Yet, it seems to me that many times the long posts are the most valuable. So, what is the etiquette for posting? Is there sensitivity to long posts? Obviously, posts, long or short, that meander or don't hit the point are not desirable. But good posts, long or short, seem to me very desirable.
BTW, I hate long posts that have no paragraph breaks. When written this way longs posts are certainly difficult to read. Many times I don't bother. Why do people do this? When properly written, a long post can be a joy to read.
I would appreciate your input.
Follow Ups:
I just assumed it was an apology left over from when 28k modems were the norm - that's where it seemed to start.

However, basic politeness and a reluctance to take comments out of their original context prevents me from citing some stark examples where any considerations of etiquette are notable by their absence... Yes, I have a rather "traditional" approach to such matters!...
"BTW, I hate long posts that have no paragraph breaks. When written this way longs posts are certainly difficult to read. Many times I don't bother. Why do people do this? "They do it because they are ignorant. Plain and simple. Most folks don't write very well because they were never required to do so in elementary and jr./sr. high school. The lack of punctuation, no paragraph breaks, and run-on sentences are rife on the Internet. I don't waste my time reading stuff by folks who can't be bothered to use proper grammar and punctuation.
They rarely post anything of value anyway...
Unfortunately, that's not true. There are some very savvy DIYers, tube fiends and vinyl junkies that are quite old school - and don't construct the most readable of posts. But often they have a lot to say.
Regards,
Geoff

Jokes!
If the subject matter keeps my interest, I read the posts. But often, I'll read about one-fourth the way down, get bored stiff, and move to something else.My only pet peeve is a lengthy review of an audio component, where I'd rather first read the summary in the product "strengths" and "weaknesses", only to scroll down and see the phrase "See review.".
The reviewer was able to spend a few hours writing the review, yet couldn't spend an extra five minutes providing the "short answers" at the end. More-often than not, in such instance, I end up not reading even a portion of the review.

I find long posts to be the hobgoblins on weak positions on any given subject. One of the many tenants of good writting is to always consider your audience. I for one consider most here to be well versed as an audiophile, hence long down out (diarrhea of the keeboard) entrys just bore the snot out of most us.
News flash for all you novel writters, nobody actually reads your entire post, we just skim over it looking for key points and more than likely, go right to the end to see if you've actually managed to say anything worth while.
Brevity is a beautiful thing. It takes a whole lot more thought to write something in it's entirety briefly, than endlessley prattle all over the place.
1) Achieving all of one's audio targets is likely to be a sometimes difficult, and often involved, procedure...2) Those who may have the attention-span of a gnat may have inherent difficulties in achieving such aims...
Bill.
I lost concentration.

Geoff

At least you were brief.

"the many tenants of good writting"Thanks for the chuckle. You had me Googling to see if Good Writting was perhaps a big apartment complex in some British city.
"tenants"...."tenets"....or how about "mortise and tenons"? The building blocks of AA writing skills? Spell check, or a dictionary needs more employment. And Good Listenning to you, Doc....it's outside of Leeds. Or is that Staffordshire? No, it's just before Foreplay.
That level of anal retention just proves my point.

So sorry, I seem to have struck a nerve. I thought the rather creative grammer in your post was intentional - my error.

True.
I think the apologies come from those who realize we live in a world of soundbites and some folks may experience some pain and discomfort spending more than 10 seconds reading a post.
What I find odd are posts which have "(long)" at the end of the subject only to find that the post is no more than a few paragraphs.
So, what is the etiquette for posting? Is there sensitivity to long posts?
There may be for some, but I wouldn't worry about it. No one's forced to read anything here.

how do you make a bold font on this thing?
![]()
Hey Kuma!
how do you make a bold font on this thing?
Sorry, you can't do it on a Mac. Gotta have a PC.
![]()
Just use the bold HTML tags, which are and (except replace the left and right brackets with left and right arrows). The goes just before the text you want bolded, and goes just after it.
For example:
The quick brown fox jumped over the lazy dogs.
will look like this:
The quick brown fox jumped over the lazy dogs .
Gotta be careful though. There's a bug in the software that causes it to randomly blow its brains out when HTML tags are used within the text. It will put an "HTML tag not allowed" message where the offending tag is and will eat up all the text after it.
So be sure and use the Preview Message before you post to make sure everything's ok.
One way to avoid it is if you're able to put the HTML tags on their own lines, which is easy to do if you're just quoting text instead of bold a word within some text. I used to do quoting like this:
Blah, blah, blah, blah...[
But to avoid the glitch, I now do it like this:

Blah, blah, blah, blah...
se

HowdySome random thoughts on the subject:
One of my favorite quotes is "I apologize for the length of this letter, but I didn't have time to make it shorter." I've seen it attributed to many people but I like it's essence. IMO too many people don't take the time to boil their posts down to the point they really wish to make. If you expect a lot of people to read your posts you should do them the honor of taking a little time to make it easy for them to get your point.
I don't like long posts on a contentious subject because there are too many people who feel that they need to respond in kind to each point and the responses grow even bigger.
Personally even short posts take me a while to compose, especially since I like to find references to help people understand my point. I don't have the time or talent to write longer posts.
...or so I was told.
I've seen it attributed to Churchill.

Karma16,I should reply to your post as I believe I'm one of the worst "offenders" of very long posts around here.
The reason for long posts in my case is that I don't care for abrupt, replies to complex topics- and in the realm of reproduced sound, there is almost nothing that can be very compactly described or put in historical context, whether the description of a particular 12AU7, repairing an unhappy Marantz 10B tuner, or a favourite recording of a Frescobaldi Capriccio. Books could be written alone on very specialised, arcane topics such as the rebranding of tubes and of course on the music.
Sometimes, I sense that people have anxieties of various kinds- their beloved McIntosh isn't working, they believe thay've bought something that is fake, or overpaid for poor quality, they just can't seem to get the best from their expensive tube preamp, are unhappy With Borodin, & etc.- and I like to think a reply with concern- and call for calm is appropriate- and more welcome. Taking audio seriously requires a lot of effort, aural memory, and of course, often a pile of brass to pay for it. I should like people to benefit from my expensive and 20+ years of experience- if possible saving worry and duplicate effort.
I try to reply to others as I would like if I were posting, and this in my view, takes words, words to get anything meaningful done. I don;t often apologise for my very long posts, unless I spend what I consider to be too much time with diversions and digressions from the topic. I believe that if my writing holds interest I will be rewarded with someone reading the whole thing and repsonding, and if not, the person only needs move on and I will have at least had good practice writing. From responses I get typically, I'm actually a bit surprised to see how many people do read all the way through!
It's interesting that this topic came up today as I thought only yesterday that today I would be making my last post on this forum, and this post on "Outside" would probably be the longest post on this forum ever- my swan song- over 6000 words. I was not planning to apologise for the length either!
Welcome to the Audio Asylum and I believe if you stick with it, you can have an enjoyable and useful time of it. There are people who really know the technical stuff, many well-known industry professionals, and others with deep asthetic, analytical, historical knowledge and critical insight. Plus, I do believe I made genuine friends and have have coorpsonded offline with quite a few people with whom I've enjoyed gabbing and from whom I benefitted. This is by way of also offering a thank you to all here for the six or so years I've been hanging around.
As the name implies, we're nut cases, but mostly harmless after a good helping of audio obsessive/compulsive catharsis !
Cheers,
back soon. Posts are only long when they are devoid of intelligent content. That is never the case when you post. I look forward to seeing you back soon.

Ahoy Bambi B,Your posts are always bril and I enjoy reading and learning from them. If I'm not much mistaken, you are in the Santa Monica area. Do you ever pop in for a pint at the King's Head in Santa Monica? I ask because I am local to the area and would very much enjoy meeting up with you when you have a free evening. We could discuss ARC (a passion of mine also) and all things audio - perhaps over a game of Darts.
and, are you female, as someone last week suggested?Keep the MR tubes hot. I still have to get my uncle's old MR 66 back and try it someday, hopefully soon.

you just need a good editor!

Bambi B, whereas you seem inclined to make rather long posts, I've found most all of them to be particularly interesting and informative, usually filled with a good dollop of wisdom, a fine sense of humor and the accumulated knowledge of experience.Given that, leaving on Outside is akin to sneaking out of the building through the putrid bathroom down the shabby hall and out the back door. Maintain you dignity man! If you have to go, PLEASE don't do so in such an ignoble fashion!

HI bambi.
Yes, as a matter of fact you and I have commnicated via PM concerning ARC issues. I guess you don't remember me but I remember your excellent posts and our PM's.
Karma16,Sorry, of course I remember our discussion. I was looking at your Karma16 moniker- which is how I always adress replies even if I know the person's name- and when we had corresponded you were writing as "Sparky".
Best regards to beautiful New Mexico !
Cheers,

My resolutions never quite turn out as intended either. While I've never sworn off the Asylum altogether, I find myself posting (and reading) here more than what I consider healthy at times. Perhaps I should mellow out. Yeah, that's it, I'm going to mellow out. Excitable boy they all said.
