Some random thoughts on the subject:

One of my favorite quotes is "I apologize for the length of this letter, but I didn't have time to make it shorter." I've seen it attributed to many people but I like it's essence. IMO too many people don't take the time to boil their posts down to the point they really wish to make. If you expect a lot of people to read your posts you should do them the honor of taking a little time to make it easy for them to get your point.

I don't like long posts on a contentious subject because there are too many people who feel that they need to respond in kind to each point and the responses grow even bigger.

Personally even short posts take me a while to compose, especially since I like to find references to help people understand my point. I don't have the time or talent to write longer posts.
