Most other list members have forgotten more about the topic than I'll ever know but I'm not convinced that noise measurements on a memory stick can reliably be used to undermne the competence of USB audio devices. I'm not even clear whether they use the same transmission protocols.
That said, it seems reasonable to assume that HDDs linked via a MoBo's USB ports would tend to impact on soundcard performance even when the HDDs are idle.
However, unless I misunderstand the literature, a PCIe bus is less likely to impact on PCI-connected devices. Connecting USB drives via a PCIe/USB adaptor could well compare with using SATA drives, other things being equal.
(BTW, it's true that using SATA drives brings them all on at powerup but the corollary is that they all come on whether you need them or not. Er, how often would you need an all-Wagner data drive?)
