RE: high end gear downstream, (where differences really show),

I am confused. So is the question:

How much does one need to spend on a DAC before it can reveal software playback differences?

**OR**

How badly broken does a DAC need to be before it can reveal software playback differences?

This test has merit in that only the software player was changed. The guy made changes and measured the result each time. And it seems the results DID change (at least a little bit) from player to player.

Now I gotta ask. His experiment could have a flaw.

Did he measure the SAME PLAYER TWICE and test his test method for repeatability? If there are subtle differences between players (and indeed I saw some there) are these differences audible? Are they because of the different players used? Or simply because the test file was played multiple times, regardless of the fact it was played in different players?

Cheers,
Presto
