Hi Klaus,
of course a perfect DAC completely immune to any influences from the outside world would be the way to go, but the problem is that nobody knows how to make it. Right now we are in a situation where all the known influences have been dealt with (at least by a few people) and we still have problems. So now it's a job of hypothesizing a possible vector, devising experiments to test it, come up with ways to alleviate it, and see what happens. So far the definitive vector and solution has not been found. It could take a long time to come up with a good solution.
So until that search is fruitful there are other options such as this that are possibilities. It's obviously not a perfect solution but it is something that is possible to build today.
It doesn't have to be as bleak as you mention. You can still use fancy gui based systems with iPad remotes and all that for selecting music to play, and via an optical connection as I proposed for seeing what is playing. The only major difference is you give up immediate response. After you have selected what you want to play it take 40 seconds or so to download the samples to the box before it starts playing. As far as remote control of the playing itself is concerned, I'm sure we can come up with some way to get an optical connection to the box for controlling the basic transport functions. (start, stop, skip back, skip forward, go to beginning) All these can be done instantly as they work within already downloaded samples. It should be possible to write a plugin for LMS that could use the squeeze system to run this.
