Altering data has its own problems in terms of the quality of the DSP algorithms and filtering used. Is there a perfect algorithm or filter that can actually make an imperfect recording more perfect? Or do they just tailor the sound to suit someone's taste or maybe create a synergy that addresses the shortcomings of down stream components?
