How about letting the existing drivers send the data using the regular isochronous method, and buffering it locally on the device anyway (for later playback at locally-clocked speeds)?Granted, this just moves the software support into the firmware on the device (which is probably more of a pain to write than drivers), but at least you'd only need to get it right once (then the various platforms--Windows, Mac, Linux--could just continue using existing sound drivers that believe they are controlling the playback speed using the isochronous USB mode).
