All the Lowther front horns I am familiar with don't have a front compression chamber - the throat extends all the way to the baffle that the driver is mounted into. This probably is the reason for the wide range response up to around 10k hz. Since this is for home audio, you don't need really high efficiency and likely would prefer the one driver - wide range option. I think, though, the effect of this arrangement on HOMs and the continued existence of peaky response is another matter for discussion.
Different phase plugs can have a large effect on the beaming and power response of the high frequencies. This website provides a nice comparison of the effect of different phase plugs for a Lowther driver on open baffle:

I attached the bullet curve effect and one for a larger 45 degree phase plug, the overall diameter of which is about the size of the Lowther cone. The affect on the frequency response is impressive. The Beauhorn Virtuoso sells a wood phase plug similar to this. To test out this effect, I mounted a PAR 38 light bulb as a phase plug for my Lowther DX4s mounted on conical waveguides. Since I plan on also using my Lowthers for a home movie theater, the reduced beaming and improved power response is very desirable to allow multiple people to hear a similar frequency response.
