Go the diyaudio subwoofer forum and you will find lots of builders who have built tapped horns. Mine are 7 ft tall but only about 15" square so their footprint is reasonable. Mates flawlessly with my mid bass horns. But they are driven by some large wattage Crest amps and an active crossover. I recommend one per side if you decide to go that route.
Also google Tom Danley's white paper on tapped horns.
