This happened recently to some friends. An interconnect cable that was purchased as one of a used pair from a dealer who previously loaned the pair as demonstrators, that has a dielectric bias system and is not Audioquest, shorted out the bias supply to the signal lead. This destroyed the output stage of the source component and the power amp to which the cable was attached. Luckily, the amp fuse protected the speaker.Investigation revealed internal mechanical damage, as though the defect cable had been severely twisted at one end.
If I were a cable manufacturer, I would not want any cables that were outside my control to return to my facility. I'm sure reviewers are careful with the equipment under their care, but any time something is outside the manufacturer's control, it is a risk to the manufacturer's reputation to make further use of it.
