Cables, pebbles in jars, clever clocks and the like are, as you know, in the category of products which the more technically educated will claim do nothing audible under normal conditions. All started appearing in the mainstream after the end of the hi-fi boom and shortly after mainstream magazines switched to using reviews without controls. All these products have effectively zero technical R&D costs (but not necessarily marketing R&D) and high margins. Marketing would appear to be everything for these products and it would strike me as odd if they were not treated differently to the types of products for which Stereophile typically provides supporting measurements.
