You raise a good point...

I went back and listened to my mangled LP of Aqualung from my college days and did notice the change in the timbre of the flute as it got into the ribbon's range. I also listened to some solo violin and noticed the same thing. I suppose I've been hearing this all along without realizing it until now.

I suppose that has been the evolution of the 3 series in that they worked to integrate the ribbon better by using a quasi ribbon for the midrange. I don't think this issue is as noticeable in the 3.5's or 3.6's that I've heard.
