Re: THANKS! & do different Traps handle different things?

mart,

The ASC tube traps are designed to absorb bass in a resistive and more or less linear fashion. All sound energy down to a certain point, which in the case of the traps, is related to their diameter (it is actually internal volume, but since they are all the same size, to get deeper absorption, you need a bigger diameter) is absorbed. Since they are placed in the corner, where each room mode is at maximal excitation with respect to pressure, they tend to flatten and smooth the room's bass response, no matter what the overall dimensions are, and without regard to a specific tuning.

Helmholtz resonators are sort of like a big room vent, but in order for them to do more than create their own resonance, they are usually filled with a damping material, which also tens to spread out the tuning a bit, as it is difficult to hit the exact frequency, and if you don't hit the exact room mode with the Helmholtz resonator undamped, you will have created another problem in the bass range, instead of fixing one.

The resistive bass traps are much less problematic in this regard, and are inherently a non-tuned device.

I suggest you check out the ASC web site, listed in my notes, and they have a new URL:
